Dr Lozonschi joined USF and Tampa General Hospital in July of 2020 from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston where he was Professor of Surgery with Tenure, John M. Kratz Endowed Chair in Cardiovascular Research and served as the Director of Surgical Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplantation. Dr. Lozonschi has led Heart Transplant programs starting 2010 at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. Dr. Lozonschi performed the first combined heart-liver transplantation in Wisconsin. He was Chief of Cardiac Surgery at the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin, where he performed the first ever in-house robotic cardiac surgery. He was the first surgeon in the U.S. to implant the Heartmate 3 device in the veteran population. Dr Lozonschi had a long standing interest in transcatheter valve therapies and he was the Principal Investigator on all Edwards Lifesciences’ FDA pivotal TAVR trials (I, II and III). He helped develop the Tendyne transcatheter mitral valve system and he was the surgical proctor for the first transcatheter mitral valve replacement in a clinical trial in the world, in Sydney and Brisbane, Australia as well as in the US at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, MN, Medstar Hospital in Washington, DC and Cleveland Clinic, OH. He is one of the founders and currently on the board of directors of Vdyne, a Tricuspid Transcatheter Valve Company.
